Golden Hour Picnic Photography Session at Historic Oak View Park

One of our favorite sessions this year was a picnic themed anniversary shoot with Hannah and Austin at Historic Oak View County Park. It was their three year anniversary, and we wanted to give them more than a standard portrait session, so we put together a full summer evening picnic for them to actually enjoy while we photographed it. It came together into one of the most fun, most summer sessions we’ve shot all year.

Who We Are

We are Amelia and Matt Photo, a husband and wife team photographing couples, engagements, families, and newborns across Raleigh, Cary, and Durham. We’re based in Cary, NC, and sessions like Hannah and Austin’s picnic evening are exactly why we love this work, building something a couple actually gets to experience, not just stand still for. A Picnic Built for Hannah and Austin

We wanted this to feel like the perfect summer evening picnic, not just a backdrop, so we thought through every detail. A checkered tablecloth laid out in the field, a picnic basket, watermelon, cherries, and cold Diet Coke in glass bottles, all chosen to look as good as they’d taste. We added a sunflower bouquet too, something for them to hold and a nice pop of color against the blanket. It was actually Hannah’s first time ever trying a cherry, and getting to catch her reaction on camera turned into one of our favorite candid moments of the whole session.

Every piece of the setup was there to give Hannah and Austin something to actually do together instead of just sitting and posing, reaching for the same slice of watermelon, laughing over a warm soda, holding the bouquet between them without thinking about the camera.

Golden Hour Light in the Field

We planned the timing around the light as much as the picnic itself. Summer evenings at this park turn golden early, and we wanted Hannah and Austin settled into the picnic right as it started to hit. There was no rushing through it, just letting them enjoy the evening while the light did the rest.

A Quieter Moment by the Fence

From the field, we walked over to a fence line on the property that gives you a completely different mood, a nice shift from the picnic’s playfulness. We slowed the pace down here on purpose. Some of the more emotional, close up portraits of the session came from this stretch, just the two of them leaning into each other with the field behind them.

Dancing by the Light Poles

As the evening went on, we brought them over to a row of light poles that make a great, simple backdrop once they’re lit, the last stop we’d planned for the evening. This is where things turned playful again, dancing, a few dips, a couple of kisses caught mid laugh. We closed the session back at the picnic blanket, watermelon slices in hand as the light finally faded, ending the evening the same way it began.

Ideas for Planning Your Own Picnic or Date Night Session

If Hannah and Austin’s session has you thinking about doing something similar, a few things worth knowing. Early evening is the sweet spot for a golden hour picnic session, you get soft light for a while and it keeps getting better as the sun drops. A checkered blanket and a few real snacks go a long way, cold drinks in glass bottles, fruit that photographs well like watermelon or berries, something you’d actually want to eat and not just look at. Flowers are an easy add if you want a bit of color and something to hold when you’re not sure what to do with your hands, which is a common thing people worry about before a session.
